To what should be no one's surprise, I am currently minorly obsessed with  pro-gay Swedish glam rock band: The Ark.

This song is so my jam.  Sadly, there appears to be no video, so you cannot fully see their glam rock flamboyantly fabulous selves.

This fan video is also pretty swell:

The lead singer really reminds me of Greivo from Brain Candy.

When then reminds me of this scene:

Which reminds me of this magnet we bought at Crafty Bastards:

And that is how my brain works!  I'm sure you really wanted to know.

My other current obsession is mail order cupcakes in a jar from Etsy.  I threw caution to the wind and ordered some this week, and omfg, they truly are the best thing ever.  I will gladly support this business in the future.

Today is awesome.  I slept in a bit, went to the amish market to stock up on goodness before they temporarily shut down to move to a new location, napped, had wings and cupcakes for lunch, napped again,  read some mindless trashy mags, looked up odd youtube videos and am currently drinking a big Pimm's Cup

I really hope it rains tonight so I won't be woken up by parking lot fireworks.  Happy Fourth, people!

Hear ye, Pittsburghers

So my youngest and most awesome brother is finishing up  a radiology tech program this summer, and his lease is up in July.  He's looking to move out of the area once he finds employment, but he needs some place to stay that's preferably not Meadville in the meantime.  My brother and "sister in law" who got married originally offered him a place in their new 6 bedroom, house, but they wanted to gouge him on the rental price because they're selfish dicks.  Seeing as how he has to do unpaid hospital residencies for his program on top of his school schedule, he can't afford this.

Does anyone have space for the month of August for a very polite 24 year old who is a gourmet chef  and good company?   He's also very good at staying out of the way if you want.  He can pay you some amount of rent for the crash space, possibly cook for you, clean or watch your pets.  Maybe some light home repair!  Most of his belongings will be in storage, and his current plan is to do a week by week rotation with family members he doesn't really get along with.

Anyone?  Oh, he also doesn't yet know I'm trying to hunt for him.  Please pass this on if you can.  Thanks

Oh HAI

I just spent the last 2.5 hours running around and writing a script to be used in the Secretary of Transportation's CNN interview.

I hope it ends up online.

I will drink my very much deserved espresso now.

Line dance mania

  • May. 24th, 2008 at 6:15 PM
Long story, but I was trying to remember all the steps to doing the Alley Cat dance that they made you do in elementary school or junior high gym class.

I have two observations:
1: Asian immigrants seem to love learning this dance and all line dances in general, if YouTube is to be believed, and
2: Oscar the Cowboy is fricking awesome, and I have nothing but love for him.

Sometimes When We Touch!!!  Aggghhhhhh!!!

Oscar, I would never step on your blue suede shoes. Watch those hip gyrations!!!

Best Train Driver Ever

  • May. 1st, 2008 at 8:13 AM

"Oooookay passengars, look lively, wake up, we're at Navy Yard.  Have a good day and I'll see you tomorrow, same metro time, same metro train."

He talks in a smooth jazz-funk kind of voice, which makes everything 10 times better as well.

In other news, I <3 my new vegan handbag.  It's this one, but it purple.

The fact that the style is named Depeche Mode was not the reason I bought, it actually.  it's just a nice coincidence.  :D

Right now one of the PBS stations is showing a film about the underground trail in Northwestern PA.  Yay.  They keep mentioning the hometown.  Perhaps I should buy the dvd for my parents.

We were doing our normal, leisurely Saturday morning grocery shopping at Superfresh, (which is the best name ever for a grocery store, btw) when I spotted these fantastic inventions!

Why yes, that IS a walking matzah ball!  Sadly, he doesn't walk very well because his body is made of foam and weighs down his little mechanical feet.

And those ARE Passover finger puppets!  Note the matzoh appears again.  Not walking this time.

It was truly a holy day, for these items were on sale and happily made their way home with me.  I may have accidentally squeaked with excitement.

I wish the grocery store had these.  They're pretty amazing.  The "darkness" plague puppet is particularly offensive.  The "boils" puppet is completely awesome though.

See how much fun the ten plagues can be?

I wonder if the Earth Day concert on the mall has been rained out yet?  I have used the rainy afternoon to read an entire book from start to finish, make strawberry butter, and prepare an afternoon tea for us.

For the first time ever, the cat projectile vomited water from a chair.  She was under the tablecloth, so it took me a moment to figure out why it looked like the rain was pouring under the table.  Poor kitty.  Maybe she's learned a valuable lesson about drinking too much water?  I doubt it.

And all of the other pet geeks out there.

Here is Miss Bling with her laundry basket as claimed as her tent, her turtle shell, her home base and her refuge.  You can also see the scarf I bought at a thrift store in Boston for myself and which she promptly claimed as hers.  She loves both of these objects so much I don't dare to take them away.

 BIG WEEKEND TRIBUTE FILM FEST!
AN EATBAR SUNDAY CINEMA SERIES EVENT
SUNDAY, APRIL 6 - ALL DAY LONG

Join us this Sunday for a marathon retrospective featuring the strangely iconic, albeit egregiously underrated star of the silver screen John Cusack. We'll begin coverage of his impressive oeuvre beginning at noon on Sunday alongside our eggs and bloodies and take the show right on through the day and well into the night. This marks the first installment of an ongoing tribute series dedicated to a few of our favorite pop culture stars, and to be perfectly honest, something we think just might be a whole lot of fun for everyone.

There is no price for admission and the concession stand treats (including our nearly addictively sinister white truffle popcorn) are on the house, so grab your friends and let's go to the movies for the whole day!

NOON - Better Off Dead (1985)

2:00 PM - One Crazy Summer (1986)

4:00 PM - Being John Malkovich (1999)

6:00 PM - Say Anything (1989)

8:00 PM - Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)

April 27 - Tribute to Julia Roberts

Heads up - AFI Theater this weekend

  • Apr. 4th, 2008 at 7:57 AM

The Bette Davis Film Festival has begin, and tonight AFI is showing All About Eve, which seems like a fantastic way to spend a miserably cold and rainy night.  The movie starts at 7:00.

ALL ABOUT EVE

"Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night!" says Davis's screen apotheosis, A-list actress Margo channing. But it's she who gets bumped off by her duplicitous protegee Anne Baxter as the ambitious Eve Harrington, a young starlet who models herself on Davis only to supplant her in a win-at-all-costs rise to stardom. The most nominated film in oscar history with 14, winning six, including Best Picture, Director and Screenplay nods for Joseph L. Mankiewicz.

DIR/SCR Joseph L. Mankiewicz; PROD Darryl F. Zanuck. US, 1950, b&w, 138 min.

Friday, April 4, 7:00; Saturday, April 5, 3:30; Sunday, April 6, 1:00; Tuesday, April 8, 7:00

Also, I can't go to this event at the Archives, but you should because it looks awesome.

Thursday, April 10, at 7 p.m.
William G. McGowan Theater
A Century Ago: The Films of 1907
Featuring live musical accompaniment by award-winning musician and composer Michael Mortilla

Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in partnership with The Charles Guggenheim Center for the Documentary Film and the Foundation for the National Archives, “A Century Ago: The Films of 1907” presents a selection of rare turn-of-the-20th-century international films, including trick films, “actualities” (films showing real things or events), primitive dramas, and gag films, all produced during this year of creative expansion and transition. Compiled and hosted by Randy Haberkamp, Director of Educational and Special Projects for the Academy Foundation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the program will be highlighted by the pixilation (stop-action animation) sensation The Haunted Hotel, by J. Stuart Blackton of Vitagraph; the first film version of Ben-Hur, from the Kalem Company, which led to a precedent-setting copyright infringement case; a hand-tinted version of Les Kiriki, Acrobates Japonais, from Pathé Studios in France; and such crowd pleasers as The Teddy Bears, from Edison Studios, and The Dancing Pig, from Pathé. Most prints are in 35mm and are drawn from the collections of the Academy Film Archive, the Library of Congress, and the UCLA Film & Television Archive. (120 minutes)

Metro Hate

  • Mar. 2nd, 2008 at 2:28 PM
Dear guy at the metro station:  Thanks so much for being a self-centered clueless person when you decided to block the entrance gate to re-adjust your coffee cup.  And thanks again for blocking both sides of the escalator and not moving when I repeatedly said excuse me, making me miss my train by 5 seconds.  I know you're not a tourist because you had a SmartTrip Card, so why are you being such an asshole?  Waiting 30 minutes for the next train really makes no sense for what I planned on being a 45 minute outing.

Dear DC metro management:  What the hell were you thinking when you decided to stop enforcing a ban or investigation of people who take numerous photos of the station platform and the insides of trains?  I feel so much safer for that decision.    From talking to the station manager, they're only allowed to investigate suspicious people when they  use a tripod for their photos.  Way to cripple the system!  I know it will take an act of terrorism to get you to change this decision, and sadly, that's what will probably happen.

No love,

Me.

Feb. 16th, 2008

I woke up extra early and got all ready to run errands, and my car won't start.  It's been really cold here, but it started last Monday when it was super cold outside (with a little struggle and a a lot of warming up before moving, of course.) The radio and the air turn on, so I'm guessing it's not the battery. I guess I'll try again when the temperature goes above 32 today, and if it still doesn't work, tow it to the shop? This really sucks as I don't have the $$$ to throw at the car this month. Ironically, I just renewed my state registration, so it figures.

Blaaarrrggggh.

I hate February.

Is it feasible that the battery's almost dead and yet the air/radio will still turn on?
